The Arts

 The arts domain includes children’s participation in art in the broader meaning-dance, dramatics, fine arts, and music. It involves children participating actively and learning to place value in what they are observing. Component concepts in this domain include: Expression and representation and understanding and appreciation.

Indicators for the Arts for three year olds include:

  •  Participates in group music experiences
  •  Uses a variety of art materials for tactile experience and explorations

 Indicators for the Arts for four year olds include:

  •  Responds to artistic creations or events

 Indicators for the Arts for five year olds include:

  •  Participates in creative movement, dance and drama
  •  Uses a variety of art materials to explore and express ideas and emotions

Parents can help children in the arts domain by:

  •  Singing with their children daily
  •  Providing instruments for their children to play along and dance to
  •  Asking children to move in different ways “like a snake, like a penguin”
  •  Pointing out and commenting on art in everyday routines-at Dr’s office, in magazine
  •  Providing a variety of drawing materials for their children to use everyday
  •  Playing different types of music and discussing them-classical, folk, jazz, etc
  •  Acting out their favorite story with their children
  •  Commenting on the different art work in the books they are reading to their children
  •  Asking their children about how the child made their pictures, paintings, etc
  •  Taking children to see different musical and dance performances

The arts domain refers to children learning to use the arts to express, represent and integrate their experiences as well as helping children to gain an understanding and an appreciation for the arts. Giving children the time and experience to explore different art materials and techniques to try as well as providing a wide variety of activities and materials so children are exposed to the arts is critical to this domain as well.
