Social Studies
The social studies domain includes the ever widening
perspective children have of the people and places around
them. Providing children with information and opportunities
to discuss and observe different cultures and about their
own gives them critical skills in this domain. Component concepts
in this domain include: people, past and present, human interdependence,
citizenship and government, and people and where they live.
Indicators for social studies for three year olds include:

Shows awareness of group rules

Describes some jobs that people do

Shows beginning awareness of their environment
Indicators for social studies for four year olds include:

Shows awareness of what it means to be a leader

Begins to understand family needs, roles and relationships

Identifies similarities and differences in personal and family
characteristics
Indicators for social studies for five year olds include:

Begins to be aware of technology and how it affects life

Demonstrates beginning awareness of state and country

Expresses beginning geographic thinking
Parents can help children the social studies domain by:
-
Talking about the differences and similarities in their family
and in others – number of members, hair color, size, etc
-
Pointing out the different ways to say “hello” in other languages
-
Discussing the various jobs family members perform
-
Having children role playing being a shop keeper, librarian
etc
-
Taking trips to various neighborhood shops and describing
the function of each-the flower store, the grocery store
-
Establishing and discussing family rules
-
Giving each child to be the “leader” and what that may entail
-
Recycling and discussing its purpose with the children
-
Participating in a neighborhood clean up
-
Talking about the many different types of familes around
the world
The social studies domain refers to children’s understanding of the
world around them. They begin to understand themselves as
separate individuals and begin to recognize and appreciate
the differences in others and in to be aware of the culture
and world around them.
